For the last 26 years, I have served as a deaconess in the Lutheran Church. Growing up in Charleston, the church was my second home. I went to kindergarten at my home church, St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, on the corner of Rutledge Avenue and Moultrie Street. My sister and I attended Sunday School every week, went to Weekday Church School every Wednesday afternoon, and spent two full weeks in Vacation Bible School every summer. Many of the important events in my life took place in church.
Because of the rich heritage of the Lutheran Church and its beautiful liturgy, a theology deeply rooted and grounded in Scripture, and loving parents who took to heart the vows they made at my baptism, it seemed natural that I would find my "niche" working for the church. I grew up in the "Golden Age" of Sunday School. Our church was buzzing with activity and full of loving and caring adults who took their roles as faith teachers quite seriously, so my foundation in the Christian faith and Lutheran theology is strong and unwavering.
My school years were the fifties and sixties. I graduated from St. Andrew's High School in 1967, attended Winthrop College from 1967 through 1969--when it was still an all-female school. The two years I spent there began a 10-year process during which I gradually burst out of my shell of shyness.
As I look back on my nearly idyllic childhood and my strong foundation in the Christian faith, I know now that they were what prepared me for my life's work and my many interests. I AM NEVER BORED!
And so I present my resume, the sum and substance of my life, in the hope that my education, my life experience, my deep faith and my penchant for living "outside the box," form a complete package that will inspire some future employer to recognize the qualities, enthusiasm, and servant heart in new and creative ways |
